Functional Movement Screen at Catacombs

We talk a lot about functional fitness in CrossFit and at Catacombs, we talk a lot about injury prevention and moving well. Many of you know that you have weak spots...tight hips, less than desirable thoracic mobility, etc. When an athlete gets injured, it is generally a pattern of poor movement over weeks, months, or years that lead to the actual moment of injury. What if you could identify and intercept those poor movement patterns before the critical tipping point that leads to acute injury?

There is a fantastic tool called the Functional Movement Screen (FMS) that can do just that. This screen observes 7 basic movements that will highlight your imbalances and dysfunctions. Yes, we all have them. These imbalances can be at the root of chronic problems or they may be laying the groundwork for your next injury. The FMS shines a light on areas in your body or movements to which you need to pay extra attention.

Going through the screen, you may find that performing a lunge with your left foot forward is easy. When you attempt to perform the same movement with your right foot forward..... not so much. Yet you have never noticed doing lunges in a workout that you are actually doing two very different movements when comparing right to left, because the focus is on intensity.

Chris Furer, CMT will be conducting the screen for Catacombs members on Sunday, June 14th. Chris is an athlete at Catacombs and has extensive experience with the FMS. With the information we get from the screen, he will work with you to develop a corrective program of a few key exercises that you can perform before your workout. You start your workout with more mobility and stability thus get more out of it. Learn what it feels like to be more stable so that you can recognize when you are compensating. Compensating for a dysfunctional muscle set or joint in a high intensity workout is a prime setup for injury.

Screening takes approximately 15 minutes and will be performed on a walk-in basis on Sunday, June 14th from 8:30 to 12:30. We will have a sign up sheet at the front desk for those interested. There is no cost for the screening for Catacombs athletes. What do you have to lose?
