Have you ever come to 5 PM class and wondered what in the world was happening in the main workout area? Who are those middle school and high school kids that are crushing CrossFit workouts after school? Well, they are an eclectic mix of runners, climbers, mountain bikers and all around great kids. They participate in our T-Up! program which is a strength and conditioning program headed up by Dustin. Yes, they work out hard every single session; but they also talk about nutrition, taking care of business at school, being a good teammate, and generally making good choices. Today we profile one of those kids, Georgia Witchel.
While many of our kids are active in outdoor pursuits, Georgia takes this to a new level. Her chosen sport is rock climbing, specifically ice climbing. She recently participated in the Winter Youth Olympic Games in Lillehamer, Norway. We couldn't be more proud of Georgia and her athletic endeavors. Never one to boast of her accomplishments, we sent Dustin to track her down and answer a few questions for us.
1. What grade are you in and what do you do with your time outside of class? I am currently in eighth grade (14 years old). I have a part time internship, but climbing and training dominates most of my days after school.
2. How long have you been ice climbing? I have been Ice climbing for about four or five years, but I just started mixed climbing around two years ago,
3. What does it take make the Youth Olympics for Ice Climbing? Because ice climbing is a new sport there aren't normal tryouts like most other events. You have to establish yourself as a climber and be invited to participate. A lot of ice climbing is mental, so gaining hours on the wall is really important.
4. Aside from actually climbing, what other kinds of training do you do? Lots of pull ups and sit ups. Climbing exercises a lot of upper body, so the longer you can stay in a locked off position the better. I like any workouts at Catacombs that involve pull ups., but I am not a very big fan of wall balls.
