If you have spent much time at Catacombs or talking to any of our coaches, one of the first things you will hear us say is that we are an endurance focused gym. Our athletes like to get outside and play...running, biking, hiking, climbing…all of it. We use CrossFit to be better at the things we love to do outside. Yes, we lift heavy and yes, we program the fast burners; but it is all designed with the goal of making you better outside of the gym rather than just achieving a 500-pound deadlift. Endurance sports are weaved heavily into our DNA.

Every summer, we indulge our passion for endurance sports with a deep dive into the endurance side of CrossFit. We offer a specialty endurance program for athletes within Catacombs and the broader community that combines race training with CrossFit. Without fail, we have lots of athletes complete their first half marathons, most achieve personal bests, and a few even land in the Top 5 or Top 10 of their chosen races. Most of all, we have a lot of fun along the way. This year, we have designed our program to culminate with either the Thirsty 13 Half Marathon or the Imogene Pass Run. The Catacombs Endurance Team is a fantastic way to prepare for either event or to just get some more running into your training regimen this summer.

How does it work?

Traditional half marathon/marathon training plans have a long history of leaving aspiring athletes with overuse injuries like plantar fasciitis or even stress fractures. Focused purely on running, they often fail to account for the core strength and whole body stability needed for the long haul. This leaves us vulnerable to imbalance and injury. A hybrid program of strength and conditioning combined with a progressive run training plan gives newcomers to the sport a much better chance of making it to the starting line healthy and prepared. For those used to a traditional training plan, often the strength and conditioning component is the missing piece to breaking through to next level performance.

What does the training plan look like?

The endurance team is a 12 week all-encompassing training program. A typical week looks like this:

  • Monday: Weekly email with nutrition tips, training plan for the week, meetup locations and training focus and motivation for the week. Optional group run or on your own training day.
  • Tuesday: Track, interval, or intensity day (various locations)
  • Wed: Rest or easy run day
  • Thursday: Strength and conditioning at Catacombs
  • Saturday: Group Distance Run (various locations)
  • Sunday: Yoga at Catacombs

What if I’ve never run a half marathon before or I’m not in very good shape right now?

This program is for you. We are the experts in meeting athletes where they are. It’s what we do. Community, coaching, accountability and well-designed training plans are the proven path to success. Don’t just run a half marathon, get in the best shape of your life and make some new friends while you are at it.

Dates, Costs, Logistics

The program kicks off on June 6th and will run through August 23rd in preparation for the Thirsty Thirteen on August 24th. A subset of the team will also be training for the Imogene Pass Run on September 10th. You do not need to be able to make all training sessions to participate but continuity and consistency are keys to success. All levels are welcome. We are willing to scale and modify this program for everyone from first timers to those looking to place in the Top 5.

All weekday sessions are at 6 PM. Saturday group runs will be early morning. Sunday Yoga is at 5 PM.

The cost for the program is $275. Register with a friend and save $25 each. Catacombs members already on an unlimited membership save $100.
