You Need A Coach, Not A Gym

It’s New Year’s Resolution season and one of the most popular categories for resolutions is to improve health and fitness. Hopefully your resolutions have more structure and specificity to them than “get in better shape”, as we know that goals without a plan NEVER come to fruition.

If your plan consists of joining a gym, however, I’d like to challenge you to think a little harder about that strategy. And here’s why. I’ve experienced 12 years of resolutioners crowding gyms in the first couple of weeks of January only to lose steam and give up before meaningful change or results can take hold. It breaks my heart to see the opportunity for lasting results wasted in those hungry for change and motivated to try. As most of us know all too well, the statistics on success for those going that route are abysmal. But year after year we do the same thing…because we don’t really know what else to try.

But let me paint you a different picture. The problem was never about the absence of equipment or a place to workout–that’s really all a gym is. The problem is in a lack of a program, consistent accountability, and an environment that inspires you to keep showing up and putting in the work. At some level, I’ve always known this, but I’ve seen it demonstrated over and over through the pandemic when our doors were closed. Suddenly we had no access to our equipment or our place, but we we saw people continue to get results and improve their lives in the most challenging of circumstances.

Why? I’ve already given you the answers…a program, consistent accountability, and an environment of motivation and inspiration. These things come from having a coach, not from joining a gym.
